We use 'Skype for Business' from Microsoft which is part of the Office 365 installation that integrates with Outlook contacts as well. Also claimed to support various platforms like tablet, PCs and blackberry phones.

I can manage contacts from my older personal Skype ID and the new official ID seamlessly.

I've seen a lot of users use the apps like private social messengers. For screwing around mostly. You'd see a few who would take their laptops to large meetings and they'd be typing away and giggling amongst themselves.

We are too small for that. We talk, email, and have meetings. Only 7 of us in the office and about 30 welders, coatings, assembly. I'm the only engineer/drafter.

I believe Skype for Business has now replaced Lync.

Greg:

Never heard of Lync before; looked up online only after you mentioned it.

We were on jabber until recently and used it for 8 years at EDS/HP

Team-mates never communicated using jabber nor sent message, we just 'jabbed' everything around - that was the slang word used!

Nevertheless, the whole range of emoticons that comes with Skype is un-matched by any other tool.

Many of our casual conversations now start and end only using emoticons:

Like Tushar we use Skype for Business. You just have to be careful with that tool because it saves the conversations inside of Outlook under a Conversation History folder! So either you have to play nice or remember to delete the contents inside of Outlook.

Lync is now Skype for Business.

Someone in a different area asked me if I'd get some feedback from "the community". It's not as off-topic as it seems at first.
