# ST10 - Part - Variable round

Phenom

Ik have a part that represents a bended foam. Normally I draw this in sheet metal and unbend for the flat patern.

Now the foam is a bit more complex, so I do it different. I insert a part copy and link trough variables.

The arc length is now 438,96mm, but if I ask this, the foam cutter has a big laugh. So I try to round the dimension. I can round it to the next mm, but I would like to round to the next 5 or 10 mm step.

In this case, I would like the variable would go to 440.

Any idea how to do this?

=round(V575/5)*5

This will however only round to the nearest whole number

so,

431.96 = 430

432.96 = 435

or

=round(V575/10)*10

so,

434.96 = 430

435.96 = 440

Hi @Joris

Hi @Tushar

the IMHO correct formula would be FIX(originalVariable/5+1)*5 for getting the next higher 5mm value or
FIX(originalVariable/10+1)*10 for getting the next higher 10mm value.

Much appreciated.

So @Joris now has all possibile usages - nearest and next higher.

Thanks all!

Strange workaround, but it works.

Hi @Joris

bsides all mentioned above, You also and always can set the dimensions display to full 10mm via the smart ribbon bar setting:

But this only gives the next rounded 10mm value, that could be less (for any xxx(0-4.99) or more for any xxx(5-9.99)) number

So where are these formula functions like "round" and "fix" listed?

Edit: so FIX is in the wizard, but round?

Is it the same as RND? And it works spelled either way?

No, RND is for random. Where did round come from?

INT?

@bshand, In Excel, press Alt+F11 to open the VBA editor.

Double-click Sheet1 from the list on the left to open the code window.

Type the following:

Sub Main()

End Sub

Between those two lines Type Math. when a list of functions appear.

All those are supported in Solid Edge.

Also intrinsic VBA functions like CInt, CDbl, CBool - they all work in the Variable Table.

I remember @Johnson_BigMatt has been asking for ability to use all Excel functions in SE - right ?

That would be great to have.

Also not exactly related,

but specifying a dimension value in inches using the in or inch suffix when the document unit is mm - also simply works!

Back in Solid Edge V11 after having used 5 versions of Solid Edge I had discovered that is you pressed Ctrl+O, then setting the file filter to *.* I could see JPEG, PNG, GIF and BMP files in the preview pane besides .PAR, .ASM. PSM and .DFT

It just worked!

Wouldn't it be more user friendly to put them all in the wizard?

Not sure what this means:

But I'll experiment tomorrow. I don't have Edge available now.

Hi @bshand

You are 100% right when finding ROUND()  is no SE function.

See the functions button in the variable table to get a list of all available functions.
