What I wanted to highlight is that since an entire underlying technology is implemented for speicifc use in SE, the other features of that technique are available automatically.
It appears that SE uses the VB scripting engine for evaluation and some functions are made available in the variable table wizard. So others work equally well. You can think of it as just a hack.
Also perhaps, Solid Edge complies with, this is just a guess, some kind of Microsoft standard on saving the preview bitmap at specific location in the native file structure so it can accessed easily in the Windows Explorer or file open dialog's preview pane. Since BMP, JPG and other file formats too follow the standard, they are visible in the preview pane in the file open dialog. Solid Edge does not actually open those image formats.
