ST7: Good but nothing is perfect

I started using ST7 this morning and am happy with a lot of things, good work!

Off course there are some things that could be better, I'll try to list them up here.

1.

When Opening a draft and changing the "Source File" I need to click first on:

Edit links

The "Change Source" is greyed out.

To activate this button I need to click "Update Now"

again Edit Links

Now I can change the source.

This is an extra step I didn't needed to do in ST6

Re: ST7: Good but nothing is perfect

Found this note in the Help on the Edit Links for Draft...

Change Source

Accesses the Change Source dialog box. Use the Change Source dialog box only to resolve a link in which the folder and/or the file name has changed. Otherwise, use the Replace Part command or Revision Manager.

Re: ST7: Good but nothing is perfect

"Replace part" does not exist in Draft.

Revision manager: Why using an extra program if the open one can do the job?

I use(d) this command when making drafts of similar parts.

  • copy original draft
  • rename copied draft
  • open copied draft
  • change source
  • cleanup dimensions
  • finished

So Siemens want me to:

  • open original draft in RM
  • copy draft
  • rename draft
  • perform action
  • replace part
  • perform action
  • close RM
  • open draft in SE
  • cleanup
  • finished

Why simple if we can make it difficult.

Re: ST7: Good but nothing is perfect

It's no wonder they don't want us using the embedded Edit Links option...it STILL does not have a resizable window after 3 years of a sitting ER and 3 versions of the software! To those of you with long filepaths or filenames, enjoy your Edit Links tiny window hell!

Re: ST7: Good but nothing is perfect

For sure, the behavior is different in ST7 compared to ST6.

While waiting for the revamp of the Edit Links window, maybe you can use the following workaround.
- Click on Update Views (this will "load" the model in memory).
- Edit Links, select source, click on change source.

We may also consider asking for the following enhancement:
- After pressing the "Update Now" button, dialog box should stay open with refreshed information (Status = Loaded).  This would allow us to change source.
- Adding the ability to right-click in the source column and select "Load".

Re: ST7: Good but nothing is perfect

I'm jealous, I can't find the link or get a hold of my reseller to even start the process of moving to ST7. The description included the statement that is would "flatten anything" I just hope it can "Fold anything" I have about 30 problems that I hope it will fix at least half of them.

Hi Joris,

I am attempting to reproduce your problem.

I have created a simple part and a drawing in ST7.

If I go to Application Menu -> Manage -> Edit Links and click on the source file path shown in the dialog, the Change Source button is available.

I then made a simple change to the model and went back to the drawing.  The drawing is out-of-date as expected.  Without updating the views, I again used Application Menu -> Manage -> Edit Links, and again the Change Source button is available.

Was this part and/or drawing created in ST6?

Thanks,

Steve

Re: ST7: Good but nothing is perfect

Thanks for looking at this problem!

How I receive a greyed out button:

Make part 1

make a draft from part 1

Make a new part starting with a copy of part 1

Make a copy of draft 1 (in windows) and rename this draft file.

Open draft 2 and try to change the source from part 1 to part 2.

I had this problem with old files, but I made a test with all new files and had the same problem:

Re: ST7: Good but nothing is perfect

Thanks for the explanation.  I am able to duplicate this situation in ST7.  I have investigated in ST6 and the behavior is as you describe.   While there may be some reason for this to have changed intentionally, this feels like a regression to me.

I am filing a PR on this issue.
