Is the free student edition a single or multi-user platform? If multi, how do I install on more than one device?

I believe the Student Edition is a single licensed install meant to be individually registered by each student.  There is a High School Edition license that is meant as a teacher download that can be installed on several devices in a classroom.

There is also a University Edition license that is a bit different for that setting but you must contact a reseller for that.

As @KennyG said, the High School Edition will allow you to install on as many computers as you like.
