Today Microsoft indicated the fix is in. Here is the KB info. I don't see an explicit mention of the GDI memory issue but I didn't follow all the links.
I have just installed this KB (Manually donwloaded) and I must say that first tests are really promising.
Everything is back to fly... will tell later today if the good performance stay there or degrade while time pass.
I can confirm, as well that on ST10, this patch works quite well. Night and day. I have a couple fairly large draft files that like to build the issue really fast, but they operate just fine. In fact, it appears that the draft file actually opened a bit faster itself as well. Didn't take nearly as long to populate the sheets as it did previously.
Initial use......is as good as others are reporting. "Night & Day".
All in all, a great result. I'll run it for a few more hours before I load it onto my collegue's PC.
Thanks to the SE team for the perseverance in countering this.

The KB worked for us as well, unfortunately I'm having the same trouble again since the last Windows update... Reinstalling the KB won't do the trick. Any new idea's?
@Jos_Buschgens there are two types of Windows 10 updates -- Feature updates and Quality updates.
Regardless of which type of update, you should really review your Windows 10 Update policy and consider explicitly delaying Windows 10 updates:
