Interesting, @Stefan_Mitsch, but contrary to advice I've received previously.
Are there any other Insight users or Siemens experts with (excuse the pun) Insights?
@bshand: We have almost 30 customers using Insight and we offer our services worldwide.
This is because of our deep understanding of Insight and the integration solutions we have:
- Connect to ERP
- Setup custom workflows (e.g. create PDFs from released Drafts)
- Multisite solution to connect different subsidiaries
- Google like search capability for the Non-Manged and managed files (SE, Word, PDF, TIFF,etc)
- etc. etc.
You can get in touch with me directly and we can setup an online session and we can show it to you how it will work with the File Explorer and the Internet Explorer as well.
Almost everyone of our users opened Insight managed files from Windows Explorer. Never had any issues.
Good to see this discussion on Insight and some of the latest developments in the ST8 release. From a Siemens perspective we continue to invest in Insight updating it with each release of Solid Edge to support the large number of Solid Edge customers using this software to manage their Solid Edge files. As discussed in this thread we added SharePoint 2013 support with the ST8 release, also support through Insight for simplified assemblies in Solid Edge, and SharePoint shortcuts for Solid Edge commands like Insert Part, Lifecycle Assistant and Revision Manager.
"also support through Insight for simplified assemblies in Solid Edge"
@DavidChadwick, could you elaborate a little on that? What that means exactly, how it differs from previous releases, etc.?
With ST8 Insight now recognizes the settings in the Solid Edge Options – Assembly Open As dialog that control which parts in an assembly are copied to the local cache from the SharePoint server. This improves performance of the Open operation when working with Large Assemblies. Greg Baldwin from our technical team created the attached graphic:
@DavidChadwick, Thanks. That's good. I wish for an open read-only option for some future release. Otherwise the improvements to the Sharepoint interface itself were just what the Dr. ordered IMO.
Good to know that these enhancements in Insight will be useful to you. Open As Read Only through Insight was added in ST7 - you can just see the option in the Open File Dialog (above and to the left of the smaller oval markup - this screenshot is from ST8 but should be there for ST7)
