Hi,

I am using SE ST8. I am unable to open a step file sent by my vendor. I browse the file to open it, but the SE goes back to its home screen. Attached is the file. Please help open the file.

Hi @ISL

First I would turn the log ile on and see what happens.

I believe that with ST8 there was an option in Step import to use the new Step standard.

Turn this on too.

Wolfgang

Hi @ISL

OK, just - back in the office - tried to open Your Step file, an dI have a good and a bad news for You or maybe 2 good news:

  • the original file seems to come from Solid Works, so there is no need for going via step, You directly can import the works file
  • and I also can not open this step file, same as on Your system, working and stopping without any error.
  • but if You look into this step file, which by the way is very small too, so I must suppose that theer could not be much inside, could be understood as if there are only curves or points, but I am no profi in this issue
  • and as mentioned, a step file normally has the size of several MB and not only kB

Hi @hawcad

I am not sure on that. This was pre-install on computer before joined this place.

How do I check that? Can I check it on my SE Application.?

Hi @ISL

what do You mean with "it was preinstalled on my computer?"

A step file is nothing to be installed, You have got it from a customer or from a supplier, isn't it?

You should be able to get it again and best would be as original Solid Works file

Wolfgang

Hi @hawcad

Thank you for the analysis.

I do have the .SLDASM version of the file which is directly saved from Solid works (I have attached).

I am unable to open tis either. The error is "The file is originally saved in solidworks 2000 or lower version".

The size of the file might be because it is a small component.

The file consist of a solid body.

This reply was for your question on "Maintenance Pack of ST8"

I tried opening the STEP file with ST8 and ST10 and also NX10

There seems to be a problem with the file, and as @hawcad mentioned it mostly consists of points and coord-sys but down towards the end are some edge and face definitions too.

Also it is strange to see that Solid Edge cannot read an older SW file but only a later version.

So as the message says, the best option would be to save as Parasolid, instead of STEP or even the original SLDASM.

I would recommend checking the version of Parasolid that Solid Edge supports for your ST8 installation.

Accordingly export that version from SW if it supports specific version export.
