Unreadible .dft file

Experimenter
Experimenter

Hi, I have a file made by SE 2D st8, that is not possible to be opened nor from old version, neither with new ST9 installed in the new PC.

I recovered an older version dated 29 sept, and it is not readible, too. I am quite sure to have opened it in middle of september, no problem.

Older backup could be avaiable, but I believe to loose part of recent modifications.

File is a very large one since it was the repository of several schemes stored along the time (33MB).

Any hint to recover at least part of the job? Other files do not show that problem.

Thanks for any help

@Davide_NTC, What message are you getting?

What type of license was your ST8 software?  If it was a University/Student license and you are now attempting to use a different license like the commercial or Free2D license, you may not be able to open the file due to the restriction imposed on the educational licenses where the files saved in those licenses connot be opened in the other license types.

Of course in the very odd chance that the file has become corrupt and you are under a maintenance agreement, you can have it submitted to development for inspection and possibly a fix.

Hi, thanks for fast reply.

Previous version was free/2D as the newer one.

File was unreadible with both ( casually it happened just before a programmed change of my PC, so I had the possibility to try open it with two different PCs,  and two different versions).

No service agreement, we use it for a marginal documentation task, but the affected file was a container of many schemes. Any idea?

Right there, it's talking about wrong versions, so what Ken has described especialy at the end that the file needs to be reported to GTAC to fix unless it is opened with the correct version of SE.

Hi,

I compared three .dft files: 1.dft and 2.dft that are ok, and 3.dft that is corrupted (33MB)

davide@zen:~/Scrivania/dft$ ls -al *
-rwxr----- 1 davide davide   604160 ott 20 21:29 1.dft
-rwxr----- 1 davide davide   526848 ott 20 21:29 2.dft
-rwxr----- 1 davide davide 34965504 ott 20 21:29 3.dft

a check with Linux file utility showed that it is not a permssions problem:

davide@zen:~/Scrivania/dft$ file *
1.dft: Composite Document File V2 Document, Little Endian, Os: Windows, Version 6.1, Code page: 1200, Locale ID: 1040, Author: davsan, Template: metric draft.dft, Last Saved By: davsan, Revision Number: 91, Last Printed: Fri Feb 10 15:02:12 2017, Create Time/Date: Mon Feb 27 10:55:20 2012, Last Saved Time/Date: Fri May  5 12:21:35 2017, Number of Pages: 0, Number of Words: 0, Number of Characters: 0, Name of Creating Application: Solid Edge, Security: 0
2.dft: Composite Document File V2 Document, Little Endian, Os: Windows, Version 10.0, Code page: 1200, Locale ID: 1040, Author: davsan, Template: iso draft.dft, Last Saved By: davsan, Revision Number: 108, Last Printed: Tue Dec 13 09:45:51 2016, Create Time/Date: Fri Oct 20 14:42:16 2017, Last Saved Time/Date: Fri Oct 20 14:43:44 2017, Number of Pages: 0, Number of Words: 0, Number of Characters: 0, Name of Creating Application: Solid Edge, Security: 0
3.dft: Composite Document File V2 Document, No summary info

A binary edit on 3.dft shows that a corruped section in file header is present, compared with the oter two files (if should be all FFh), maybe SE is not able to manage a file larger than 32MB?

Honestly, you are making and spending more time  on this then necessary.  Solid Edge can handle files much, much larger than 32 MB.  Your file, for whatever unknown reason, has simply become corrupt.  If you have active software maintenance you can submit the file for potential repair.  Otherwise, you will need to restore the file from one of your backups.

Thanks for reply,

indeed it was not a waste of time since I learned a lot of things in the meanwhile....

Restoring the files from an old backup, the file is now opened, I found that by unknown reasons, the entities named "connector" are no more editable: they appear on drawing but they are no more selectable in any way, editable or erasable.

Maybe I forgot some information on how to operate on them?

Thanks for any hint, regards

SOLVED: Entities not selectable.. there is a setting on SELEC menu to include some entities or not. It was not selected by default on new release ST9
