dxf to sketch

Hello forum!

I have a thought that needs pondering.

I have several dxf files that work really well in draft sight.

I need to create cutout templates for each of the dxf files.  51 files total

Is there a process to create sketches from those dxf files and if so how?

Thank you for your time and input.

Hi @Lex-luthor

I think first approach can be a simple "Copy/Paste" procedure or You use the 3D Create from draft

Keep in mind, that You can open a DXF directly as sketch within a part/asm

Hi there @Lex-luthor,

If you are looking to set these profiles up for easy re-use after importing into Solid Edge, then I would look at setting up a block library [works in 2D Draft's ony] for them.....or else if you need profiles for 3D use, then set up a feature library.

As @hawcad points out, Copy/Paste is a simple way to transfer geometry from one file to another.....you may want to check the 2D Paist Behaivior in SE-Options, is how you want it to happen.

@hawcad

Its gonna take me a little time to play with the files.

When I ty to open the dxf as a part, there is nothing there.  I am using SE ST9, ordered level.

Thank you for the quick replay though

@Lex-luthor,

DXF files are [as far as Solid Edge is concerned] 2D only files, so you will need to open them into a DRAFT template first, then you may copy/paste your geometry into PAR, or PSM profile sketch.

Actually DXF files can be opened directly to a Part Sketch.  When using the SE Open form, select your DXF file with a single mouse click and then select the 2017-10-02_15-23-35.png button.  You should see a selection like the pic below where you can decide how the DXF file is opened.

Oh yeah, forgot that "option" was there........that'll get @Lex-luthor what is required much faster.

However, I do wish the user didn't HAVE to use this method. Choosing what template [PAR, PSM, ASM, DFT] "should" run the options allowed [user defined] for that selection, in order to achieve the same import.

@SeanCresswell

Took me a few mins and a few hundred tries, but I managed to finally get it through, now just have to scale it down to the correct size, it is like 100 fold bigger than what I thought.

Again, Thank you Sean.

As you step through the Options you should see a converesion units setting. make sure you have that set correctly.

The usual case is to be 2.54 or 25.4 out - inches to/from mm.
