how do you deal with purchased assemblies?

how do you deal with purchased assemblies to make them act as parts.

in some cases (ie: bearings) we dumb them down to parts.

in other cases we turn them into a weldment.

we simply wnat to only ever see this item in a BOM as a part.

Is there another method more commnly used?

My Friend,

I suggest using purchased assemblies importing in part environment as a multibody part. It has a lot of advantages...

For example:

  • easy to handle this "assy"
  • you can use simplified part for "assy"
  • you have control over hatching in draft
  • you can handle "assy" as a part in BOM
  • ... etc

Here is a video, what can be useful:

I agree with Imics, it's the best way even though the multibodies can be anoying to look at...

From within the purchased assembly you could set all of the components Occurrence Properties to not show in Parts List.

I typically use import part copy and delete unneeded detail (which is usually pretty easy with synchronous) in most cases IF you want to treat that supplied assembly as a single item so that assemblies aren't cluttered with unnecessary faces and graphical overhead and drawings aren't also cluttered with useless detail.

Imic's motor is the type of part we use but we would only be interested in shaft size and location, overall size and mounting base and holes. So the cooling fins for instance would be the first to go among other things. The attached is a representative example.
