It is not possible to place a assembly copy into a family of assembly if you haven't check the 'Apply edits to all members'.

well that option is un-checkable for the assembly I have

Re: insert assembly copy is not supported in family of assembly files

Hmm, do you even have a family of assembly?
Otherwise it should be checkable/not greyed out.

one part has a family of parts ... thats the reason I need it

to explain real quick what I need
I have the following:
Part1 - form1 - drawing
Assembly1 which contains Part1 - form1 - assembly drawing
and finally
Assembly2 which contains Assembly1 which in turn contains Part1 - form2 - assembly2 drawing

the problem that I have here is that the first part will be riveted on the final assembly but the drawings of that part until the final assembly need to have it un-riveted

Family of parts works fine in making 1 part with 2 shapes but that intermediate assembly kills me

Re: insert assembly copy is not supported in family of assembly files

Why not just place part 1 - form 2 in the 2nd assembly?
Did you populate the part family?

part1 is in the assembly 1

so a tree would look like this in the brackets I will write the form I need of part1 at each stage
Assembly2 (form2)
-Assembly 1 (form1)
--part1 (form1)

I'm confused too - could you not make Assembly 1 the family of assemblies file with two members, one with part 1 form 1 and one with part 1 form 2? Then to make the drawing of assembly 1 with form 1, use the FOA member that contains part 1 form 1 for the drawing. Then for assembly 2, place assembly 1 into it using the member that contains part 1 form 2, which would then give you Assembly 2 containing assembly 1 using part 1 form 2.
