Keyword RESERVE does not limit the total number of licenses available.  All this does is ensure that there will be a minimum number of licenses available to the assigned group preventing other non-assigned users from accessing this reserved number of licenses.  The assigned group can still take more than what has been reserved.

Keyword MAX will limit the total number of licenses a group can access.  Without trying it I do not know at this time if Solid Edge supports the use of the keyword MAX.

Hi @uk_dave

good point I forgot to mention.

So we always defined several groups with their specified reservations where the total number of licenses was equal to the total number of reservations.

This prevent any group of taking more than the assigned licenses for them.

regards
Wolfgang

Thanks for the reply regarding the "reserve" option.  I kind of figured that's how it might work.  So when you say..."licenses was equal to the total number of reservations.  This prevent any group of taking more than the assigned licenses for them."  Would I be best to reserve 3 for toolrm and 16 for design engineering?

I had the toolroom users and cpfrank log out of SE.  I re-read the lisence and this is what I get.  Notice at the bottom it now says" 1 RESERVATION for GROUP toolrm (SEATS-SRV8/27001)It did not say that before.  Any idea why?

Because toolrm is only using two licenses, one additional license is still reserved for toolrm.

If no toolrm users had taken licenses then it would state three licenses reserved.

And yes, theoretically you could reserve [assign] all of your licenses to each of the groups such that the total of all licenses available have been reserved by various groups.  This is what @hawcad was stating.

Actually now that I re-look at the server status I don't think there should be one license left for the toolrm group seeing as (2) are being used by the toolroom and (1) is being used by cpfrank, and they are part of the toolrm group.

Later in the day...why does the one above say 2 RESERVATIONs for GROUP toolrm  and the one below says 2 RESERVATIONs for GROUP toolrm??  The one below that now says 3 RESERVATIONs for GROUP toolrm.  It's almost as if they are getting an extra license.

Because at some point in the license assignment "toolroom" was not able to take one of the reserved licenses and instead got granted one of the remaining  unreserved licenses, most probably because when the second toolroom user asked for a license all three reserved licenses at that time were in use.  Then one of the reserved licenses was later returned while the fourth user session was still running.  At this point Flex isn't going to magically figure out that the fourth user should now be flipped back to a reserved but instead will see that the previously reserved is now returned and as such will make the previously used reserved once again available as a reserved.

You also have to take into consideration that when you pull these license stats that these are a snapshot at that moment in time and do not show the historical assignment of the licenses.

That makes sense.  I have to apologize for my limited knowledge of how the lisencing works.  Given what you said, I'm trying to figure out what makes the most sense for setting this up .

We have a pool of 19 licenses, 16 of which design engineering "owns", and 3 that the toolroom "owns".  We have certain "power users" and we have the "occasional" user and as you've seen we run into the toolroom using too many.  The RESERVE option doesn't work that great if I just include design engineers and toolroom because that would limit our use and we couldn't pull a license while in our conf rooms unless I add our conf rooms to the DE group.

I'm thinking the MAX option might be our best solution, but before I make a decision, does anyone know how the TIMEOUT option works?  If I set it for 1 hr and the user gets "timedout", will they still be able to save their work?  Do they have to wait for a license to become available in order to save their work?

Although TIMEOUT is a Flex option, currently Solid Edge does not support using TIMEOUT.

Hi @MikeSaari

so solve it the other way round.

Create a group of users for a DESIGN and RESERVE them 16 licenses.

To prevent all designer occupying all licenses You also should RESERVE 3 for the toolroom

So You have reserved all licenses for adequate users.

regards
Wolfgang

Except that would then require putting all non-toolroom users into the design group which is what @MikeSaari stated he did not want to do.
