Create Realistic Breaks of Drawing Views with Improved Broken Views in Solid Edge 2019

Siemens Experimenter Siemens Experimenter
Siemens Experimenter

Drawing views are now supported to break in a direction other than horizontal and vertical. This allows you to define the break axis for break orientation and break lines are applied along with or normal to the defined break axis. This creates realistic breaks of isometric views and views elongated in direction other than X and Y. In this post, we will go over the details of user defined break axis for broken views workflow in Solid Edge 2019.

Broken view command:

‘Add Break Lines’ command which applies breaks to views is now renamed to ‘Broken View’. The ‘Broken View’ command available on shortcut menu of drawing views, is now available on ribbon as well. This gives easier access to the command.

Break line orientation:

The ‘Broken View’ command presents a dropdown option on command bar to select the orientation for break lines. ‘Horizontal/Vertical’ is the legacy option where either horizontal or vertical break lines are applied to break the drawing view. ‘Use Break Axis’ is the new option with which a break axis can be defined to create the break lines along with or normal to the defined break axis.

Define break axis:

When break line orientation is set to ‘Use Break Axis’, a break axis can be defined to specify the orientation of the break line. An axis is defined by selecting two keypoints or linear elements in the drawing view. Below is the option available on command bar to enter into ‘Define break axis’ step.

A dotted line appears between selected keypoints or on linear element to denote the defined break axis, like below.

The break axis is associative with the drawing view elements used to define it. Any change in the related drawing view geometry causes the break axis to reorient accordingly.

Break directions:

For break lines created using break axis, break directions can be specified as:

  1. Along with axis: Specifies that the break lines are created and the drawing view is broken parallel to the defined break axis.
  2. Normal to axis: Specifies that the break lines are created and the drawing view is broken perpendicular to the defined break axis.

Break directions for break lines can be specified using command bar options shown below.

For the break axis defined in previous step, example of along with axis type break line pair is:

An example of normal to axis type break line pair is:

Break axis behavioral characteristics:

  1. Only one break axis can be defined for a drawing view. Multiple break axes for a drawing view cannot be defined. If a break axis is already defined, then the command bar option to define break axis remain disabled.
  2. When there is a need to change the orientation of break axis, break axis can be redefined. In this case, delete all associated break line pairs with the defined break axis and then ‘Define Break Axis’ option is enabled for redefinition.
  3. Multiple break line pairs using single break axis can be created. But, intersecting break line pairs cannot be created to a drawing view i.e. one along the axis and other normal to axis.
  4. Mixed set of break orientations for break line pairs cannot be created to a drawing view i.e. one with ‘Horizontal/Vertical’ type and other with ‘Use Break Axis’ type.
  5. Break line pairs defined with break axis supports all break line types like straight, cylindrical, long break etc. Based on the selected break line type, break line parameters like break gap, height and number of symbols can be set as appropriate to the break lines defined with break axis.
  6. Break lines created with break axis cannot be inherited from source view to another view.

Broken view:

Refer below an example of broken drawing view with multiple break line pairs created normal to the break axis. The break axis is same as defined in previous steps.

Broken view with user defined break axis allows to break a view in desired direction when it may not be feasible or desirable to display a model in its entirety on a drawing. Break axis is defined in intended orientation to apply break lines along with or normal to the defined break axis. This creates realistic breaks of isometric views and views elongated in direction other than X and Y.
