Three ways to place associative hole information in draft

If your components have a huge variety and number of holes, presenting up-to-date information about holes in draft is surely one of your highly critical requirements. Try any of the following ways to get hole feature information in drawing views.

 

Placing a feature callout

 

Callout form

 

You can place a hole callout that contains all the important information in an associative form, i.e. it updates automatically when any of the respective hole features are edited or deleted. Let us place step-by-step, a feature callout for a hole feature.

 

  1. Home -> Annotation -> Callout

  1. Click in Callout text field and then click the Feature Callout button. As a result, you should see %HCadded to this field.

In next few steps, we’ll choose what pieces of information we want to add to this smart callout.

 

  1. Click Feature Callout tab and see the contents of Counterbore textbox. For example. there are symbol codes like %DI (diameter symbol) and hole parameter codes like %HS (hole size).

These preset information schemes for various types of holes are driven by Dimension styles, which can be edited as required (Home -> Dimension -> Styles). If you want to see a complete list of all such individual codes, click Symbols and Values button.

 

  1. The value of %ZH (smart hole depth) is driven by the settings on Smart Depth tab. Click this tab and set the options according to your organization’s drawing standards. For example, you may add THRU in Through field under Hole Depth group. Similarly, you may edit the Finite depth field as suitable.

5. If your component has multiple coplanar holes that are exactly same, you may use the scheme “%QC X __” in Quantity field under Hole Quantity Note. Use it as it is or edit it as needed. You may use the code %QC for coplanar holes, %QP for parallel holes or %QA for all identical holes in the model.

To include this information in the final result, add %QN before %HC (separated by a space) on the General tab.

 

  1. At this point, review all the changes once and then click OK on the dialog. The Callout command is still active.
  2. Click one of the concerned holes and then click where you want to position the callout. All the pieces of information are there in the draft now. Moreover, your smart callout is ready to respond to any changes that will be made to these hole features. All you have to do is update that particular drawing view.

Dimension form

 

Information in a feature callout can also be displayed in a hole diameter dimension form. Following are the steps to accomplish this.

 

  1. Home -> Dimension -> Smart Dimension
  2. On the commandbar, click Dimension Type and choose Feature Callout from the list
  3. Click one of the concerned holes and then click where you want to place the dimension
  4. You may use the prefix, suffix, subfix or superfix fields in the dimension to add additional text as needed. For example, the hole quantity note (%QN) has been added here as a prefix.

Retrieving hole information from a PMI Model View

 

If you already have the hole Information placed in a PMI Model View in the part model, it’s easy to retrieve it in draft.

 

  1. While placing a drawing view in draft, select the appropriate PMI model view from the dropdown (on the Drawing View Wizard dialog)

2. Tick the option to include PMI annotations

If you have placed a drawing view already, go to the General tab of Drawing View Properties dialog, and tick the above option. You can also set it as a default for a particular draft template by ticking it in Solid Edge Options -> Annotation tab.

 

  1. You should now see the retrieved hole callout in the drawing view as shown below.

  1. If the hole feature is edited, this callout will be updated as soon as you update the drawing view.

 

Placing a Hole Table

 

You may also explore the Hole Table command (Tables group) which provides many smart options to present hole information in a tabular form.
