Automotive Design Sectioning

Hi,

Does anyone know how to export section curves for autmotive body engineering application in Solid Edge?

The feature is available in CATIA under the name "Sectioning Definition".

Many thanks

Hi there,

AFAIK, the only way to export 2D geometry to another application, such as CATIA, is via DXF, DWG, or IGES.....and only from the "Draft" environment.

Thanks Sean,

I agree with you on translating them into IGES,DXF or DWG formats.

But attached is the CATIA section image I found through google search, which is what I am looking for in Solid Edge. I was wondering if we could generate these type of section curves in Solid Edge.

Many thanks

Sure can....use the "Section" tool from the PMI tab.

If wanting to export them, then you'd still have set them up in a draft sheet.

Your easiest way though, is to place an appropriate view of the assembly in draft, then make the section view[s] there, and then right-click on the section view to "Draw In View", at that level, "Save As Translated" to an acceptable format.

[DIV step disregards any view scaling, and will be 1:1 upon export]

Thanks,

I used the section tool, but could you please tell me how you generated the visuals as seen in the first image?

Sure.....

If you right-click on the resulting section shown in the assembly pathfinder, you can change the "Section Display Options" there....I had used the drop-down selection as "Show only cut faces" and also checked the "Show cutting plane".

Is it possible to draft the resulting Section definition?

Yes you can.....however, a 3D section doesn't share the same ease of placement & control as a section created in draft. [this being the reccomended method....and allows section only view]

Below is from the help file.....[place the assembly model view > right-click, select Properties > select Section tab & check the box for the section......this will now display the cut model]
