Office applications from Microsoft as Excel is widely used for analyzing data from measurements and simulations or for running more or less complex technical calculations. Ease of use, low costs and general availability make it the open toolbox among an engineer’s many software tools. Support for data exchange via APIs is as much a part of Simcenter Amesim as the integrated Excel® interface. The latter offers a powerful tool for automating work steps and exchanging data.
A new dedicated ribbon tab is activated when Excel is launched from Simcenter Amesim. This ribbon toolbar includes 4 groups that helps user to create communication between Excel and Simcenter Amesim.
Thanks to the different graphical control elements, it is then possible to map the Excel parameter attributes to your model parameter attributes in Simcenter Amesim. This mapping between Excel and Simcenter Amesim is very useful when the specifications of your system is stored in Excel file template.
Once your model in Simcenter Amesim is complete, you just need to load the Excel file and in few click the new parameters are applied to the model.
Mapping data between Excel and Simcenter Amesim
The user interface guides you to create and manage configuration files. A configuration file contains the mapping between the parameter definitions in the excel file and those of the model components in Simcenter Amesim.
This file is embedded within the model. It is then possible to apply it directly to an Excel file which layout is the one used to create the configuration file. It is very useful since you create the configuration file for once and then use it for any excel file done with the same template.
The configuration file supports integer, real values, and also look-up table creation. All necessary information are included in the configuration. Therefore unit conversion and file creation for table are automatically done, so that values are sent to component parameters in Simcenter Amesim accordingly.
Analyzing and comparing system specifications
You can create batch sets either if the different sets are defined in one single Excel file or if they are defined in multiple Excel. The option of multiple files allows you to create batch sets based on several Excel files that have the same template. In that condition the same configuration file attached to the model is used on each Excel file.
Many engineers are looking for some level of automation for a very specific task that fits into a much larger process. Large scale automation quickly presents many challenges, such as storing data, interpreting results, and error handling. The Simcenter Amesim Excel Add-In offers to step into process automation with minimum effort.
