When creating a new Solid Edge file and saving in SEEC, the default item type is set to Item. Users can select between several types from a drop down list, one of whic is a custom subtype of Item that we are using in our data model.
Is there a preference to set our custom type as the default? There is concern about users forgetting to manually set item type when first saving a file.

Yes, you can set it in a preference to only list what you want in the order you want it displayed. Remove the value ALL and add your item types you want to use. The first one in your list is your default.
Here are the list of preferences that control the Item Type list:

For the benefit of any noobs like me who find this solution in a search, I discovered that the type must be entered with it's true name, not the displayed type name (ie A2[Item type name]). Otherwise the below error shows:
The preference SEEC_Default_Item_Type has invalid value for the type SE Part.
About 2 months ago i did a configuration project about SolidEdge and TC entegration. Also i have lot of custom item types. To eleminate the time wasting for manuel selection of item types , i prepared a custom templates for all item types and with this solution designers can easily select the custom item type's templates inside the SolidEdge. In that solution , the all custom item type templates has own type. I don't know your problem is solved or not , but i saw that topic and i want to give additional information. You can find the related pic below.
To make these customization , you should use the XMLRenderingStyle sheet and SE settings.
