I have a (very old) table of contents for that course, and there is a section on managing preferences, but it's only one section out of about 20. The course may have changed in the meantime.
Either way I think it will explain the mechanics of how to manage preferences, but I don't think it will give you something like a checklist that provides a list of preferences you should consider when you create a new item type.
