Do you and your team need some help to improve your Autodesk data management?Autodesk Data ManagementAutodesk Data Management

Do you run into some of the following business challenges:

  • Manage growing amount of CAD data more effectively
  • Speed product development
  • Facilitate re-use of design data
  • Improve control of access to data

Even if you have Autodesk® data management today for your engineering work group, it may not be keeping pace with your need to collaborate and share data internally across your company and externally with customers and suppliers.

PDM takes control of designs, documents, BOMs, and processes, primarily to drive engineering efficiency and productivity, but also to improve collaboration across the business.

PLM not only manages all product-related data, but also extends the benefits of PDM to support the whole business across the product lifecycle, with specialized applications for engineering, manufacturing, procurement, purchasing, suppliers, customers, sales, and service.

In this 45-minute Autodesk data management webinar, you will understand the PDM challenges that exist, what others are seeing in the industry, and how can you overcome these challenges:

  • Single CAD and Multiple CAD support
  • Dead end, with no room to grow
  • Investments in the products, resources and time
  • How will this be supported?

PDM or PLM? Why choose when one can lead to the other?

PDM or PLM?

What's the difference between PDM and PLM? What do you need today? What will you need in the future?

If you know you need to take control of engineering data and processes, you may be struggling to determine what kind of software to buy -- product data management (PDM) or product lifecycle management (PLM)? You don't want to bite off more than you can chew ... but you also don't want to get boxed in by limited applications that can't grow with your business.

To help you, we've created this simple guide to show you the path from PDM to PLM. You don't have to choose one or the other ... because they can be connected:

Start with PDM; Grow to PLM

Many companies today want to get started with the basics of PDM to quickly see the benefits for a fast return on investment. By measuring the areas of PDM value, you can see the payback in a year or less.

From there, you can take the next step by looking beyond engineering to where you can gain the most benefits of PLM business-wide.PDM to PLM_Grow.PNG

This will deliver even more value ... but the beauty is you don't know right now where you're going to grow ... a PDM to PLM strategy gives you the assurance of future potential and payback in the future:

Autodesk PDM, for AutoCAD and Inventor, that can grow to PLM

Autodesk product data management (PDM) for AutoCAD and Inventor can help you find, share and re-use designs across your engineering team, but is it enough for you as your business grows?

Watch this video to see how Teamcenter in AutoCAD and Inventor provides an Autodesk PDM solution to help your design teams quickly search and access parts, assemblies and drawings, and save time trying to find and share design information.

As you can see, you can access and use PDM without leaving your Autodesk CAD tool of choice. Once you gain the improvements in engineering productivity and efficiency with Autodesk PDM, it follows that you may want to include more people and processes across your business. As you stretch your PDM system to do more, you need to be sure your software can grow as fast as your business.

Our approach to PDM is to give customers the flexibility to grow from PDM to product lifecycle management (PLM) in one software system. We have developed this roadmap of best practices and recommendations to help you get started with PDM, then grow to PLM, in a way that fits the priorities and budget of your business.

SolidWorks PDM can be a challenge. Do you, like many other SolidWorks users or managers, find it difficult and time-consuming to find and re-use design data? How do you assess the impact of a design change? Are you spending time updating or maintaining multiple bills of material (BOMs)?

You may know you need a SolidWorks PDM solution, but choosing from the software options can be difficult. You need enough PDM to meet your needs today, but you may need more tomorrow.

To help you get started, watch this informative video from industry analyst Tech-Clarity:

Teamcenter offers a flexible portfolio to fit your needs from PDM to PLM, and now that Active Workspace is embedded in SolidWorks, you can access and use PDM without leaving SolidWorks.

Right-size PDM fits your needs today, and in the future

PDM in a box.png

Buying PDM in a box can be an attractive but risky strategy. If you're working with a small IT staff and budget, it's important to get into production with PDM quickly. PDM in a box can do that. However, the risk is that there's no room to grow ... you can get boxed in with limited capabilities and a lack of flexibility.

As you roll out PDM, you will see the value -- not just in terms of engineering productivity -- but also for other people in the business. That's when you may want to do more. It's just as important to get PDM that's a good fit for your needs today ... as it is to know you can grow in the future.

On the other hand, if you want a PDM system that is flexible enough to be tailored to your business processes, with unlimited room to grow, it can take time and money to work with IT consultants and build it rather than simply deploy it. This can be a good option for companies who have the IT resources to invest in and support a custom PDM solution, but that's not the case for most small to medium-sized businesses looking for PDM in a box.

In this video by Tech-Clarity, Getting Started with PDM, you can see the differences in approach from highly customizable PDM systems to PDM in a box ... along with guidance to help you find the right-size PDM system to fit your needs today ... and in the future.

Citing research in "The Business Value of Product Data Management," Tech-Clarity makes the following recommendations:

  • Take advantage of pre-configured best practices
  • Limit customization
  • Leverage standard best practice workflows
  • Achieve benefits quickly
  • Grow value over time by including more processes, incorporating more people, and leveraging additional functionality as needed

This is the approach we've taken with Teamcenter Rapid Start, which delivers preconfigured PDM that you can deploy quickly and cost-effectively. To learn more, visit us at Teamcenter Rapid Start
