The acronym SPDIF stands for Sony Philips Digital Interface Format and is an interface to transmit digital audio. Sony and Philips corporations developed it and it was standardized in IEC 60958 . Transmitting the audio in digital format ( i.e 0s and 1s ) results in higher quality audio because it does not have the same level of noise as an analog audio signal.
Furthermore, some binaural Head Measuring Systems (HMS) use SPDIF formats and sometimes encode calibration and other information related to the audio measurements:
The connector type often utilized with a SPDIF interface is a stereo RCA cable like shown below. Two channels of data are carried over one SPDIF connection.
Instead of RCA cables, sometimes fiber optical cables are used with TOSLINK connectors.
On the SCADAS, the digital audio is fully synced with all the analog channels. This mode is only available on the 8th input channel of the VS8-E card. The SCADAS XS has a dedicated SPDIF input connection.
To read the settings of a digital binaural head through the SPDIF connection, in Simcenter Testlab Signature, go to the Measure worksheet.
Select Ranges (F3 key shortcut) and select Digital (F10 shortcut). Press the "Read HMS" button.
If successful, your screen should look similar to above (your ranges and equalization state may vary).
