This week we’re atStrata+Hadoop World, an event that gives us a chance to hear from our customers about what’s really important to them; and we often hear that they value options. The Dell EMC Hadoop portfolio allows customers choice from direct-attached storage to shared storage to virtualized environments to hybrid clouds. With all of these options, Dell EMC has had great success aiding customers in getting the most out of their Hadoop environments. Here are a few of our favorite customer success stories:
To deliver competitive payment processing services to merchants,Intuitmust process electronic payments as quickly as possible, while minimizing losses due to fraud and financial risk. In order to do this, Intuit gains detailed risk analysis insights with reports and risk tools that are based on new data sources, including a Hadoop cluster with unstructured clickstreams from web servers. Additionally, Intuit’s Dell EMC SAN handles extract, transform and load (ETL) processes up to twice as fast as the previous storage solution, so they can quickly add new data sources.
“We’ve accelerated the data processing of our merchant accounts by as much as 7x, and we have far fewer issues with our risk data warehouse now, because our Dell SAN storage is stable and predictable,” says Alex Lancaster, Data Engineering Manager, Risk Data Analytics Team, Intuit. “Report queries run seven times faster on average, and we’ve had no outages on our Dell storage arrays.”
Omneo,a software as a service (SaaS) big data analytics solution fromSiemens PLM Software, uses the Dell EMC | Cloudera Apache Hadoop Big Data Solutionto help companies gain a 360-degree view of their supply chains by accessing billions of product data records in seconds. The Omneo team evaluated five of the six largest data processing and storage technologies, and the company concluded that a solution based on Apache™ Hadoop® was the best fit in terms of performance, scalability and total cost of ownership. The organization worked with Dell EMC and Cloudera to build a software solution on top of the Cloudera® Distribution of Hadoop® (CDH) platform running on a cluster ofDell PowerEdge C8220 servers, giving customers total product data visibility throughout their entire supply chains
“Hadoop gave us the best cost-to-performance relationship and could handle large volumes of data and allow us to find the right big data solution,” says Dave Mitchell, CTO, Cloud Services, Siemens PLM Software. “It also gave us the opportunity to use cost-effective, highly scalable hardware architectures.”
Oriental Pearl Media, the largest IPTV service provider in China with more than 16 million subscribers, migrated its video-on-demand (VOD) content platform to Apache Hadoop clusters for private cloud. As processing power was key, the company deployed a range of Dell EMC PowerEdge servers, including R420, R620, R720XD and C6220s.
“We have multiple systems running across our infrastructure, and the Dell PowerEdge servers combine with our Dell Storage to deliver enterprise-class business continuity and data protection for our subscribers,” said Xu Feng, IT Manager, Shanghai Oriental Pearl Media. “We valued Dell’s commitment to service even after the migration was effectively signed off. Pechanga Resort and Casinois California’s largest casino, with 3,000 employees, 3,400 slot machines, and 200,000 square feet of gaming space. With a major expansion planned that will double its size, Pechanga wanted to make the best possible use of data and analytics to gain greater insight into its customers, inform its investments, and optimize day-to-day operations.
“We’re already a data-driven business. We knew that the next step was to take advantage of the latest advances in big data. We wanted to eliminate silos and aggregate data from all sources in one place where marketing, financial, and other analysts could use it easily to gain insight and make business decisions,” said John Kenefick, VP of IT & CIO. “We wanted a purpose-built solution, so we went with a converged environment on VCE Vblock®, using EMC Isilon and XtremIO® for storage and Cisco UCS. We’re using Pivotal HDB for our backend Hadoop® database and Pivotal Big Data Suite for analytics.”
Sensus,a solution provider that uses IoT devices to capture data about gas, water and electric use, then monitor usage to better conserve resources, uses a data lake, based on Dell EMC, Hadoop technologies to consolidate manufacturing, testing and other data streams. ThePowerEdge R730xdwith Cloudera Hadoop is the backbone of this new Sensus big data cluster and data lake. The company uses the cluster to ingest manufacturing, testing and RMA data streams, as well as supply chain data.
“We’ve created a data lake for the company to use as a resource,” says Mitchell Hensley, director of software strategy at Sensus “It isn’t owned by my department or owned by the engineering department. It’s a companywide resource that allows other departments within the company to create new applications, design new processes and be more efficient, because now they have powerful data to use to make those decisions.”
